Hero MotoCorp, India's largest two-wheeler maker across motorcycles, scooters, VIDA electric vehicles and premium bikes including the Harley-Davidson partnership, heads into its Q2 FY 2026-2027 print with festive demand running hot but commodity costs still biting. The key things this results will speak to are whether overall EBITDA margin stabilises near the Q1 level of 13.3% against management's guided ~50 bps input-cost uptick, and how the company addresses the widening gap between its export declines and its 40%+ export growth ambition.

The Q2 FY 2026-2027 print will test whether Hero MotoCorp's margin-neutralisation playbook can hold overall EBITDA margin near the Q1 FY27 level of 13.3% after management guided a ~50 bps QoQ input-cost uptick to be offset via product mix, discretionary spends and accelerated cost savings. The commodity basket moved against the company through the quarter — aluminium sat near record levels for most of July-September (MCX ~Rs. 348/kg in August) before easing to ~Rs. 323-326 by late October, gold rose 13% in August alone, the rupee weakened to ~Rs. 94.7 by late October, and Brent held above $100 through September with the West Asia conflict still escalating. Domestic demand is unambiguously strong — every month of the quarter set an industry retail record (July +28.3%, August +19.7%, September +33.1% YoY) — but Hero's September dispatches of 7,66,348 units (+12% YoY) ran well below the +31% VAHAN retail print, with VIDA channel stock at 2-3 days and ICE scooter channel stock at half of normal levels pointing to supply constraints rather than demand weakness. Exports are the clear soft spot, with three consecutive monthly YoY declines (July -14.3%, August -24.6%, September -31%) against management's stated 40%+ export growth path and the Germany and Nepal market entries. Management has reiterated the 14%-16% medium-term EBITDA margin target while stating it is "confident of going back to it, but not in the short term", and the call is likely to face fresh questions on the margin bridge and EV EBITDA breakeven, both of which have been declined on prior calls.
Margin vs the 14%-16% medium-term guidance: Q1 FY27 overall EBITDA margin landed at 13.3%, down 120 bps QoQ, with gross margin contracting 300 bps QoQ.
EV milestones and Ather consolidation: VIDA remains in build-out phase under a four-pillar self-sustainability strategy of PLI, scale, BOM cost reduction and calibrated pricing.
Festive conversion and the wholesale-retail gap: September dispatches grew 12% YoY while overall VAHAN retail grew 31%.
Exports trajectory: Exports fell YoY in both August 2026 (-24.56%) and September 2026 (-31.05%).
Capex execution and premium rollout: FY27 capex is guided at Rs. 1,500 Cr, confirmed by the CEO as FY27-only.
Overall EBITDA margin stepped down from 15% in Q2 FY26 to 13.3% in Q1 FY27, with gross margin contracting 300 bps QoQ on commodity costs (aluminium, precious metals and forex). Management limited the overall margin decline to 120 bps QoQ by cutting other expenses 14% sequentially, and holds a 14%-16% medium-term margin target.
Management has called 14%-16% a medium-term target, saying it is "confident of going back to it, but not in the short term" given transitory commodity inflation. It declined to give specific quarterly margin numbers due to daily market volatility.
Management has not quantified an EBITDA breakeven timeline or volume for the EV business, pointing instead to its four-pillar strategy of PLI, scale, BOM cost reduction and calibrated pricing. Per-unit EBITDA losses declined from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 40,000 QoQ in Q1 FY27, and some models are now gross-margin positive.
The CEO confirmed FY27 capex guidance of Rs. 1,500 Cr, with the entire amount for FY27 only. This includes a Rs. 750 Cr investment in the new global parts center (GPC 2.0) in Tirupati.
Standalone revenue rose 36% YoY to Rs. 12,999.82 Cr in Q1 FY27, outpacing 23% YoY volume growth of 16.77 lakh units. The 8% mix benefit came from scooters, premium, EV and global businesses, plus calibrated price increases.
