Union Bank of India, the fifth-largest public sector bank with 8,700+ branches and 168+ million customers, heads into its Q2 FY 2026-2027 print with provisional gross advances up 18.53% YoY — a sharp acceleration from Q1's 12.50%. The print will speak to whether NIM holds above 2.80% as funding costs ease, and how the bank bridges an 11.66 pp gap between advances and deposit growth while keeping the CD ratio near 84.34%.

The board is scheduled to meet on October 19, 2026, to consider and approve the Q2 FY 2026-2027 financial results. The trading window was shut from October 1, 2026, ahead of the results.
The quarter's central test is whether Union Bank can fund 18.53% provisional advances growth from deposits growing just 6.87% — an 11.66 pp gap — while holding the domestic CD ratio at 84.34%, near the 85-86% level management said it does not intend to exceed. The margin setup favours the bank: the MPC held the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% at both its August 3-5 and October 5-7, 2026 meetings, satisfying the 'assuming no further RBI rate cuts' condition behind management's NIM-improvement aspiration, and fresh term-deposit rates fell to 5.67% in August from 5.99% in June, with bulk-deposit rates declining on FCNR(B) swap liquidity. NIM stood at 2.80% in Q1 FY27 after a 16 bps QoQ improvement, and management has shifted its stance from defending 2.76% to 'defending is for sure and improving is the aspiration from here'. The swing factor is provisions: credit cost drifted to 0.38% in Q1 against the 20-40 bps run-rate management described, SMA-2 rose about Rs. 350 Cr QoQ, and the ECL transition carries an estimated Rs. 4,200-4,300 Cr shortfall with implementation from April 1, 2027. The upcoming call is expected to cover the deposit-growth bridge, the NIM bridge versus 2.80%, and whether recoveries can accelerate toward the Rs. 4,500-5,000 Cr FY27 target from Q1's Rs. 743 Cr written-off-account recovery.
Performance vs previously stated guidance: Management's FY27 scorecard comes into the call with mixed tracking.
Deposit mobilization vs 18.53% advances growth: The funding gap is the dominant execution question for this quarter.
ECL transition readiness: The expected credit loss framework goes live from April 1, 2027.
Recovery run-rate and NCLT resolutions: Recoveries need acceleration to meet the FY27 target.
Cost of funds and offshore funding: Funding-cost levers were announced for this quarter.
NIM improved 16 bps QoQ to 2.80% in Q1 FY27 as the bank converted lower-yielding portfolios to higher-yielding ones, with domestic yield on advances at 8.01% and global at 7.90%. Management has said 'defending is for sure and improving is the aspiration from here', with the condition of no further RBI rate cuts met by the MPC holding repo at 5.25% in August and October 2026.
The required net provision for the ECL transition is estimated at Rs. 4,200-4,300 Cr, with implementation from April 1, 2027. The bank expects to cover the requirement in year one without the 5-year dispensation, and the annual credit-cost impact in bps remains an open question for the upcoming call.
Credit growth guidance of 13-14% / industry+1% for FY27 is tracking at or above, with advances up 12.50% YoY in Q1 FY27 and 18.53% YoY on the provisional October 1 update to Rs. 11,55,930 Cr. Deposit growth, however, is lagging at 6.87% against the credit-minus-2% framework.
Recovery in write-offs was Rs. 743 Cr in Q1 FY27, down 52.58% QoQ, against a FY27 recoveries target of Rs. 4,500-5,000 Cr. The written-off pool is about Rs. 71,000 Cr, of which Rs. 45,000-46,000 Cr is pending in NCLT.
GNPA fell to 2.65% in Q1 FY27 from 3.29% in Q2 FY26, with NNPA at 0.47% and PCR at 95.05%. Credit cost, however, rose to 0.38% in Q1 FY27, above the 20-40 bps run-rate band management described, and SMA-2 rose about Rs. 350 Cr QoQ.
